1: THE PLAIN DEALER MONDAY, MAY 3, 1999 3-E DANCE SCOTT SHAW PLAIN DEALER PHOTOGRAPHER "Timekeepers," a work generated by improvisational language and movement games, is performed by, from left, Leslie Brunner, Cathy Whitely, Ann Vespa and Lynn Deering. Humor leaps out in Collective production REVIEW Collective like an unfinished experiment. Lisa DeCato premiered "Castings," a women's quartet inspired by Nancy Prudic's latex body castings. Costumed in shapeless dresses, dancers DeCato, Kelly, Leigh and Lynn Deering portrayed suffering souls responding to the sorrowful emotions an excerpt from Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No. 3.

The evening's major work, "Timekeepers," enjoyed the luxury of live music written by percussionist Matthew Apanius and quietly played on marimba and synthesizer by the composer and Matthew Dudack. The dancewith-text was conceived and directed by DiCello for six members of Collective and nine teachers who collaborated in the creative process. A language game with gestural movements, the generated by the performers' memories of treasured peak experiences and their visions of opportunities to correct life's mistakes. The text played with notions of time. The movements were developed within a structure that respected time and space.

A project with more meaning for the participants than the "Timekeepers" achieved its goal of taking contemporary choreography to the grass roots. By WILMA SALISBURY phy project, the dance still looked PLAIN DEALER DANCE CRITIC A duet spoofing marriage and a solo satirizing President Clinton sparked the low-key show presented by Collective on Friday night at the Cleveland State. University Dance Studio. The modest repertory program also included a mournful women's piece, an experimental duet with film and the culmination of an educational project that involved area teachers in the creative process. Expression generally took precedence over technique.

Words were valued as much as movement. Mature bodies were covered in loose costumes. Music and sound functioned as background. The most theatrical aspect of the bare-bones production was the simple but effective lighting designed by Andrew Kaletta. Dancers Joe Booth and Susan Edwards, co-choreographers of "Spoondog," have previously shown their individual flair for comedy.

Together, they were hilarious. Delightfully costumed by Nicole Peters in the front half of a wedding gown and a colorful short dress that looked like a lampshade, Edwards struggled to say the words, "I take this man to be my lawfully wedded huh-huhhuh-huh In the course of the dance, the words got twisted into "this awful man." She is more of a comedic conversationalist than she is a standup comic. A wry and witty observer of herself and those around her, Poundstone's talent is her dead-on observations and deadpan delivery. For two hours with no opening act and no intermission, Poundstone entertained her Ohio Theatre audience Saturday with observations about herself including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, her adopted daughters and foster son and politics. In her standard work clothes tie, blazer, blue jeans and patent leather shoes she alternated pacing as she delivered funny between sitting, standing, and thoughts, seemingly as they came to her. "I don't like sex," she said.

"I guess that's a weird thing to say, especially in front of a large group of people. And I do have that feeling right now that I've, perhaps, told you too much. "You know what I think is even weirder is that no matter who I've gone out with, when I tell them I don't like sex they say, 'You'll like it with me'," Poundstone said. "What? Have I inadvertently gone out with Sam I Am? I said I don't like sex. I do not like it in a house.

I do not like it with a mouse." Audience participation was encouraged, but a couple of people missed the cue, if not the clue, which usually came in the form of a question. One woman blurted out random nonsensical statements and thoughts throughout night, a strange sort of non-heckling that Poundstone handled deftly. As she began to tell a story about a recent gig in Key West, the woman slurred out, "Cleveland, Ohio." "This just in. Yes, ma'am. What?" Poundstone replied.

"Cleveland, Ohio," she repeated. "How often do you go out?" Poundstone ad-libbed. REVIEW Paula Poundstone It was the type of comedy she prefers. Poundstone created an atmosphere of comedy comfort. It was a gathering of friends sitting in a giant living room, listening to their funny friend go off on one tangent after another.

Poundstone said she was born in Alabama, but left after one month. "I found I had done everything I could there." She began winding down the show by telling how, and how many times, she had uttered a four-letter word in the presence of the First Lady at a political fund-raiser, and a few thoughts on President Clinton and a now famous intern. "I had a different take on the whole Monica Lewinsky thing. I. thought she was patriotic," Poundstone said.

"Our leader had a need that wasn't being met. And she met it. I wasn't going to do it. How about you?" After asking the audience what they were going to do after the show, she laid down on the floor," continuing to talk as she looked at the ceiling. "Hey, they have vents in the ceiling," she said.

"That's in case the building flips over and floods." "A VIRTUAL MASTERPIECE." MATRIX NOW PLAYING! WESTLAKE 30147Detrot RECAL Rd. With deliberately clumsy movements and exaggerated facial expressions, the couple worked out their relationship to the ironic accompaniment of love songs recorded by Cosmic Babies, Tom Jones, Josephine Baker and Frank Sinatra. Chris DiCello's solo, "Swingshifts," explored a subtler form of humor.

Set to the sound of a loudly thumping heart, the slinky dance was inspired by our nation's leader giving video depositions. A series of swingtime phrases integrating everyday gestures, telling eye movements and soft-shoe taps, the witty work projected a devastating portrait of a smooth and shifty character. A miniature that swiftly makes its point, the improvised solo would make a marvelous companion piece to Tom Evert's political satire, "The President." Nothing else on the program was as clear in concept or as clean in execution. Carey Kelly and Erin Leigh resurrected their punchy pajama-party duet with film projections and scenic design by Jerry Mann. Premiered on the recent Food for Thought choreogra- Jeff rain.
