The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

on FILM CLIPS 1994 FEB. FRIDAY, DEALER, PLAIN THE FROM PAGE 11 Naked Swaddled in grit and gloom, Mike Leigh's new picture knocks the wind from your lungs through sheer force of mood. Leigh, a British filmmaker, won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival fast year for this effort, and his lead, David Thewlis, won, best actor for his role as Johnny. Johnny is a young, angry vagabond who wanders the streets of London wielding brutishness and charm by turns. As he interacts with his old girlfriend, Louise (Lesley Sharp), her roommate Sophie (Katrin Cartlidge) and a series of street people, their quirks make Johnny and his anger seem sane.

This picture is not so much about plot as it is about characters, each of whom comes vividly to life through flaws and quirks. No rating. 126 minutes. Philadelphia is it fair to wish Jonathan Demme had been more daring with "Philadelphia?" After all, he has made the first big-budget, big-star Hollywood AIDS film an undeniably moving elegy to a life (thousands of lives) cut short by disease and cut off from much of humanity by fear. Still, I can't help feeling disappointed that "Philadelphia" is SO conventional, SO preachy, so TV movie-ish.

Who would have thought Demme, the exuberant independent, capable of making a Hollywood message movie? And a courtroom drama at that? Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), a rising young lawyer at an establishment firm, is fired when the partners realize he has AIDS. He decides to sue, and the only lawyer he can get to represent him is a low-rent ambulance chaser (Denzel Washington) who's hom*ophobic to boot. As they prepare and present their case, every- 3 ADULT Different MOVIES Open ATE: 267-7979 Releases Daily Admission $6.00 House of Movies (near Airport) AVON LAKE 4 $3 Late before Rd. 6pm 933-4444 "BEETHOVEN'S 2ND" (PG) 7:00 "PELICAN (PG-13) 9:10 VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE (PG-13) "MRS. No one with a heart would quarrel with the movie's message, a plea for compassion and tolerance in intolerant times.

It's just that at this point, more than a decade into the AIDS crisis, the movie seems too little, too wimpy, too late. With Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen and Joanne Woodward. Rated PG-13. 119 minutes. The Piano Jane Campion's thrillingly strange and wonderful film is like an id version of a Bronte novel a sweeping romantic saga stripped down to primal erotic impulse.

It's set in mid-1800s New Zealand, in a bush that looks like the secret garden for adults, where a strange erotic triangle grows among a brutish colonial landowner (Sam Neill), his mute mail-order bride (Holly Hunter), and an Englishman who has gone native (Harvey Keitel). The catalyst for it all is the bride's grand piano, which she has brought from Scotland. Under the amused, watchful gaze of the sexually liberated Maoris (and the bride's jealous 9-year-old daughter), the three play out their drama of sex, love and betrayal. Rated for nudity, sex and violence. 121 minutes.

The Remains of the "Oh! Why must you always hide what you feel?" the heroine cries, putting into plain words the theme of this and just about every other movie directed by James Ivory, produced by Ismail Merchant and written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala over the past three decades. Why must they hide what they feel? Because they're English, of course. In this installment of the canon think of it as UrMerchant Ivory they faithfully follow the Booker Prize-winning novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, an ironic allegory about blind loyalty. Set in 1958, but mostly taking place in flashbacks to the early '30s and '40s, it reviews the life and times of Stevens (the unparalleled Anthony Hopkins), the head but. ler of a great English country house.

Stevens is the ultimate workaholic: He.exists to be "of service." He's so busy, he can't take time to mourn his own father and scarcely notices that the housekeeper (Emma Thompson) loves him, let alone that he loves her. Rated PG. 134 minutes. Schindler's List German industrialist Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) saves more than 1,100 people in Steven Spielberg's movie, which puts you inside the horror of the Holocaust, among the Polish Jews who were herded into the Krakow ghetto and later sent to the labor and death camps. Piling gruesome detail upon detail, he gently pushes you to go beyond thinking about the unthinkable; he asks you to experience it.

"Schindler's List" is a masterpiece. Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall and Embeth Davidtz. Rated PG-13 for graphic and realistic violence. 185 minutes. Shadowlands Richard Attenborough's lovely, poignant movie chronicles the odd romance between C.S.

Lewis (Anthony Hopkins), Oxford don, Christian theologian, children's writer and confirmed bachelor, and Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), poet, divorced mother, fan and outspoken, free-spirited American, who shows up on his doorstep and changes his stuffy life. If your heart sinks at the thought of yet another proper Brit-lit movie about the thawing of the native emotional glacier, buck up. Just watching Hopkins and Winger together is one of the great, unexpected pleasures of movie going. As they said about Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, he makes her classy, she makes him sexy. And together, they make this Masterpiece Theater material come alive.

Rated PG. 131 minutes. Six Degrees of Separation Fred Schepisi's hugely entertaining film version of John Guare's comedy of manners proceeds as a series of stories, told at Manahttan's most glittering social venues by Ouisa and Flan Kittredge (Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland), an Upper East Side art dealer and his wife. The Kittredges, who were bamboozled by a charming and quick-witted con man (Will Smith) claiming to be Sidney Poitier's son, embellish the story and digress from it and bicker over it, until the film becomes as much about storytelling and gossip as it is about the hustler and his bogus claims. Guare, who based his play on news reports of a very similar scam, used the real incident as the taking-off point for a big, smart comedy about the many degrees of separations that beset Americans at the end of the millenium: between poor and rich, black and white, gay and straight, parents and children, art and artifice.

With Mary Beth Hurt, Bruce Davison and Ian McKellan. Rated for nudity and language. 111 minutes. Tombstone Would that the story were as strong as the cast, which includes Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Charlton Heston, Powers Boothe, Sam Elliott and Dana Delany, to name a few. It isn't, but "Tombstone" is still pretty entertaining in its examination of Wyatt Earp (Russell), Doc Holliday (Kilmer) and the events leading up to the gunfight at the O.K.

The War Room Legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus' high-spirited, frankly partisan documentary about the 1992 presidential race focuses on the Clinton campaign's War Room in Little Rock, presided over by James Carville, Bill Clinton's campaign manager. The Ragin' Cajun is a great character: He says exactly what he thinks without editing it for his listener, and he's so utterly free of inhibition he appears both heroic and slightly demented. Watching Carville expertly leak a story to a CBS reporter, or Carville and his deputy, George Stephanopoulos, massage the wording of a campaign ad, one comes to the realization that Pennebaker and Hegedus' prime achievement was simply gaining access to the War Room, and gaining the trust of their subjects. Their rough-and-tumble camera acts as the proverbial fly on the wall, offering an insiders' look at modern politics.

And what does the inside look like? In a word: Fun. Not rated; includes some profanity. 95 minutes. Wayne's World 2 This lesser sequel is instantly recognizable as a product stamped out by the studio factory. Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) try to put on a rock concert and become semi-adults, while Wayne's babe, Cassan- dra (Tia Carrere), is pursued by a sleazy record producer (Christopher Walken), and a new babe, Honey Hornee (Kim Basinger) pursues the dumbstruck Garth.
