The Pelican Dolby Brief Stereo (PG-13) FRIDAY, A Perfect World (PG-13) DEALER, Cinema Addams Three Family Musketeers (PG) (PG-13) Ghost In The Machine (R) PLAIN THE Geronimo Dolby Stereo (PG-13) General Mrs. Beethoven's Dolby Doubtfire Stereo 2nd (PG-13) (PG) Dolby Stereo a Advertise in The Plain Dealer FROM PAGE 9 Mrs. Doubtfire In this family-values treacle, Robin Williams plays a divorced, out-of-work actor who is desperate to see his three children so desperate, he dresses up as an English nanny and goes to work for his ex-wife (Sally Field), Williams was a drag act just waiting to happen, and he throws himself into it, doing jazzy American riffs on the noble English tradition of drag comedy he looks like he's having the most fun with a movie since "Good Morning, Vietnam." Rated PG-13. 125 minutes.

The Pelican Brief Is it possible that Alan J. Pakula did not read the same John Grisham page-turner the rest of us read? His movie version takes the wacky view that "The Pelican Brief" is Important Stuff, not a thriller at all, but a dark, brooding conspiracy epic right up there with "All the President's Men" and "JFK." Pakula, extracting every grain of sugar from Grisham's mind candy, takes the runaway plot the book's single virtue and slows it down to a funeral march. Playing a law student who figures out a conspiracy to assassinate two Supreme Court justices, and immediately becomes the target of every spook in the tree world, Julia Roberts acheives one mode waiflike fragility and sticks with it no matter what. Denzel Washington, playing an investigative reporter who helps her, wisely maintains a dignified distance. Rated PG-13 for violence.

141 minutes. The Piano Jane Campion's thrillingly strange and wonderful film is like an id version of a Bronte novel a sweeping romantic saga stripped down to primal erotic impulse. It's set in mid-1800s New Zealand, in a bush that looks like the secret garden for adults, where a strange erotic triangle grows among a brutish colonial landowner (Sam Neill), his mute mail-order bride (Holly Hunter), and an Englishman who has gone native (Harvey Keitel). The catalyst for it all is the bride's grand paino, which she has brought from Scotland. Under the amused, watchful gaze of the sexually liberated Maoris (and the bride's jealous nine-year-old daughter), the three play out their drama of sex, love and betrayal.

Rated for nudity, sex and violence. 121 minutes. The Remains of the Day "Oh! Why FILM must you always hide what you feel?" the heroine cries, putting into plain words the theme of this and just about every other movie directed by James Ivory, produced by Ismail Merchant and written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala over the past three decades. Why must they hide what they feel? Because they're English, of course. In this installment of the canon think of it as UrMerchant Ivory they faithfully follow the Booker Prize-winning novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, an ironic allegory about blind loyalty.

Set in 1958, but mostly taking place in flashbacks to the early '30s and '40s, it reviews the life and times of Stevens (the unparalleled Anthony Hopkins), the head butler of a great English country house. Stevens is the ultimate workaholic: He exists to be "of service," defining not only his working life, but his personal and moral life as well, through his master, Lord Dar- lington (James Fox) a Nazi supporter and leader of the English appeasem*nt movement that sought accommodation with Hitler. Commanding a small army of cooks, maids and underbutlers, Stevens keeps the house running smoothly for Lord Darlington's many international "conferences" of Nazis. He's so busy, he can't take time to mourn his own father and scarcely notices that the housekeeper (Emma Thompson) loves him, let alone that he loves her. Rated PG.

134 minutes. Ruby in Paradise Victor Nunez's film is about a young woman (Ashley Judd) who leaves her home in the mountains of east Tennessee, determined to find a better life for herself. The film is more often pensive than genuinely thoughtful, but it is helped immensely by Judd's gravity and strength. Not rated. 115 minutes.

Schindler's List German industrialist Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) saves more than 1,100 people in Steven Spielberg's movie, which puts you inside the horror of the Holocaust, among the Polish Jews who were herded into the Krakow ghetto and later sent to the labor and death camps. Piling gruesome detail upon detail, he gently pushes you to go beyond thinking about the unthinkable; he asks you to experience it. "Schindler's List" is a mas-. terpiece. With Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall and Embeth Davidtz.

Altman has taken eight of Carver's clean, well-lighted stories, plus one poem, and juggled them together, willy nilly. The result is a freewheeling collage of collisions and coincidences among 22 characters.

Rated for nudity, language, sex and drug use. 189 minutes. The Snapper This is a comedy as only the Irish understand comedy: a bit morose, a bit messy, but never less than full-out alive, the comedy of people who've been down so long it looks like up to them. It's about what happens to the Curley family when Sharon (Tina Kellegher), the oldest daughter, announces she's going to have a baby or snapper. Her father, Dessie (Colm Meany), worries about what the neighbors will think, especially when it looks as though the father may be one of his friends.

Rated for language and sex. 90 minutes. Tombstone Would that the story were as strong as the cast, which includes Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Charlton Heston, Powers Boothe, Sam Elliott and Dana Delany, to name a few. It isn't, but "Tombstone" is still pretty entertaining in its examination of Wyatt Earp (Russell), Doc Holliday (Kilmer) and the events leading up to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

This gothic western excels during dramatic moments in the second half. It spends too much time introducing characters and circ*mstance, however. The relationship between Earp and Holliday is particularly compelling, and Kilmer is stunning. Rated for violence. 128 minutes.
