- Twisters runtime confirmed as longer than the original
And it features more tornados, too!
Twisters has revealed its official runtime, confirming the anticipated sequel is longer than the 1996 classic.
Starring Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones and Hit Man's Glen Powell, the disaster movie follows a new group of tornado chasers who are not afraid to get right into the eye of the storm.
Ahead of its release on July 19, the Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO) has confirmed that the film runs for 122 minutes, or two hours and two minutes. That means the sequel is 14 minutes longer than Twister, which ran for 108 minutes.
The story follows Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones), a former storm-chaser who is haunted by memories of a traumatic encounter with a tornado during her college years.
Now, she studies storm patterns from the safety of her New York office, at least until she's lured back to the open plains by her friend Javi (played by In the Heights' Anthony Ramos).
Fascinated by a new groundbreaking tracking system, Cooper gets back into the field, where she finds another team led by tornado wrangler Tyler Owens (Powell).
A social media superstar, Owens' reckless behaviour allows him to get closer to the action than anybody else.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka, Peaky Blinders' Daryl McCormack, Nope's Brandon Perea and Maura Tierney also feature in the film, as well as the new Superman, David Corenswet, and Love Lies Bleeding breakout star Katy O'Brian.
Twisters is directed by Minari's Lee Isaac Chung, who also co-wrote the script alongside The Revenant's Mark L Smith.
In an interview with Collider, Smith confirmed Twisters is not a direct sequel of Twister, as the film is more of a stand-alone story.
"It's not a continuation of the original. But it's just a real wild ride with some good, fun characters," the screenwriter said.
"Hopefully, we can tap into what the original had because that thing is just iconic. But it's so cool to have a director like Isaac taking on something like this. It's just so out of his norm, and I think he's having fun."
Twisters will premiere in cinemas on Friday, July 19.
