The Tampa Tribune from Tampa, Florida (2024)

pi The Tampa Tribune-Times, Sunday, April 28, 1991 10'Spbrts TN Wauchula golfers fond of early days From Page 1 Hey, Tomi Tom McEwen to any special-interest groups. Ken Mason, Oldsmar Mentioned before that the increase in women's coverage no, not up to that of men's of the NCAA basketball is because of an increase in quality and interest. But the interest is far from comparable to that of the men's tournament Start with a comparison of the television coverage and contracts. HEY, TOM! We thought the Bucs' first three picks were pretty good, but here's how we would have drafted. Any thoughts? 4.

David Rocker DT, Auburn. 5. Craig Erick-son QB, Miami 6. Mel Agee DT, Illinois. 7.

Tripp Welborne, DB, Michigan; 8. Kenny Walker, DE, Nebraska; 9. Mike Stone-breaker, MLB, Notre Dame; 10. Al Baker, RB, Kentucky; 10. Luis Cristobol, OG, Miami; 11.

Efrum Thomas, DB, Alabama; 12. Larry Brown, DB, TCU. Darren and Jeff Gutierrez, Tampa Thoughts on the draft are as varied as there are draft watchers, beyond the first two or three picks. Surely the players you mention are up to the standard of those the Bucs picked. HEY, TOM! I am all for bolstering the Bucs' offensive line, since that has been their main problem from day one in 1976.

However, this year they wanted help in the defensive line, but excused themselves from not getting it by claiming the offensive players available at the time were better. This is like having a flooded house and calling the gardener two blocks away in-; stead of the plumber across town. With strategy like this, who needs a game plan? Who needs a game? Joe Grimaldi, Tampa A sound argument, and one made by plenty, one recognized by Coach Richard Williamson and addressed when he said the three defensive players he would have taken with the No. 1 pick were gone by picking time. He judged the decision for the big offensive lineman from Tennessee the right call.

HEY, TOM! Hockey is coming to Tampa and the franchise and the Coliseum that we are John Baker of WFSS says, "Management is petitioning the Federal Communications Commission seeking an increase In power as well as the use of a signal that will not be directional." At present, the signal heads east with great strength. Not so to the west The airing of the Reds games by WFNS Is a boost for the sports community. So would the granting of the petition. HEY, TOM! I was very pleased to see the letter from Virginia W. Marks in the April 21 issue of the Tribune regarding the poor coverage of the NCAA women's basketball championship tournament.

I agree with her wholeheartedly! In your response to her letter, you indicated that you were "surprised" that the unequal coverage of the men's and women's tournaments was interpreted as sexism. I strongly feel that there is no other logical interpretation. To report the championship game on the last page of the sports section of April 1 was further compounded by a snide remark that was made by David Alfonso in his column, which compared Pat Summitt's coaching style to Bob Knight's. To your credit, you did indicate you are "regretful" about sexism in coverage of the women's tournament. It is my hope that in the future you will take action to ensure that fair coverage is provided for women's athletics.

James Marine, Sebring remain surprised. But in support of women's basketball coverage is the fact that it is growing more popular. A reason is the quality is increasing. HEY, TOM! While I respect Mrs. Marks' right to her opinion, I disagree completely with her complaint about coverage of women's college basketball.

It is the skill level and overall interest in the game that counts, whether it is played by men, women or baboons. Women's basketball is fine, but it does not compete with the men's game any more than field hockey does with baseball. Even with the smaller ball and lower basket for women (used in one pro league), it's not the same game. Just watch the difference in rebounding, for example. Let's let quality and interest dictate the coverage in the sports pages, not sex, race or concession building is one of the great sports stories that we have had in recent months.

I am certain that the excitement is justified only I am annoyed because I am not one of the residents who understands it all. AH I know is that there isn't one youngster in our public schools, high schools, community colleges and maybe even USF who has any idea of the rules and regulations that control the ice hockey game. I would guess that not one in a thousand (maybe 10,000) of our adult sports fans have any idea of what is right or wrong or deserves a penalty. So, we'll have our snowbird Canadian friends and our Northern or Midwestern visitors enjoy our Lightning. Tom, please straighten me out so I can join the excitement.

Mel Garten, Tampa There will be ample opportunity to learn about the game, Lightning people say. Phil Esposito said his group also plans to start amateur leagues. And we at the paper will do all we can to instruct, before it all begins. Esposito's cry is, "If you come see us play live, we got you." Addiction apparently comes easy, regardless of background. HEY, TOM! I am writing to compliment you on your fair and kind informative article on the front of Monday's Sports page.

I was following Ian Woosnam during Saturday's play at TPC in Ponte Vedra, and as a fellow Brit I was carrying our Union Jack flag. That evening, I came into the bar at the Marriott and I introduced myself as the flag-bearer. We ended up with Ian supping English ale in a bar full of golf fans, and during the course of the evening only three people recognized him and asked for an autograph. I told him that if he wins the Masters he will never be able to relax in a hotel or bar like this again. He looked at me straight in the eye and said, "Chris, it's not if, it's when I win the Masters." With determination like that, winners stay winners and your article correctly portrayed just what sort of sportsman and golfer he is.

Christopher J. Duffett, Riverview Good insight on the new champ. He won it and deserved to win it because he did what the others could not do, par the final, pressurized hole. Box 191, Tampa, 33601. HEY, TOM! I am 12 years old and enjoy reading the Sports section of the Tampa Tribune every morning. I have been a fan of the Miami Hurricanes for 3l2 years now. I feel there is not enough coverage of Miami during the college football and baseball season. There was much coverage given to Florida State and Florida, which I don't mind, but I think Miami should have equal billing to the Seminoles and Gators.

Please, Tom, give us Hurricane fans some more press! Thank you. Adam Luch Kowec, Valrico Thank you for reading, Adam. We have full-time sports reporters based in Miami, Gainesville and Tallahassee. Truth is, Chuck Mulling, our man in Miami, is busier this time of year with the multitude of sports in that city; perhaps we have slighted VM some. Will check.

FSU does have the No. 1 rated team after sweeping the Hurricanes. HEY, TOM! To your knowledge, does WFNS have any plans to increase their signal power? We tried to listen to the Reds games and to the NFL draft but gave up. My husband and I love the station but it's a real fight to get a clear signal. R.M.

Latest word is it is in repose in the home of cousin Doyle, which is a fine resting place for it. d'That Bull Foot was something that Burton recalled. "You know.

Coach Every said Bull was the greatest athlete ever eut. of Wauchula High," which produced a ware famous Zeke Mowatt. Well, Bull won the SFC 100-yard dash barefoot, I remember that. Georgia offered Bull a football scholarship? but he signed a baseball contract with the.pejroit Tigers. He played a little in the miayv leagues, married Evelyn Oxford, known as Oxie, went into World War II, commission and a Silver Starrv, Italy, moved to Bradenton, was calied'up off the inactive reserve list for thjforean War, led an infantry company alqjig the Yalu River as a first lieutenant, and returned to Bradenton for a career's work with Tropicana.

that's what I called him, got to be a goo' golfer," Oxie said by telephone. "He Little Ben to play good, when hereof his temper. He was good at wrapping clubs around a tree," which, fortunately, 'tie-' didn't do that day in Winter Haven with Mr. Burton's clubs. "One day Little Ben got mad and threw a club in the water and' lectured him.

"But, Bull' Little Ben called his daddy Bull, short for Bull Foot 'yf gbt two clubs in there, now I only got onS.NHe was right. came home and said have an answer for that." tBull Foot, Wauchula's greatest athlete, died'fi few years ago of a third heart attack, "ao(F. I remember him talking about that tirqe you and John W. and Finley played with Mr. Burton's clubs and he broke a hundred and you ran out of balls.

And you say now, kid from Wauchula won the conference tournament with a 73. Some things do changejin Wauchula, don't they, Thomas," whjch.was the name by which I went, when the, nickname Puke was not used. Me, I don't think I played golf again un-til tbegan writing for the Fort Myers 1947, writing, by the way, a golf column. And you ask how could I write about golf without knowing how to play? '7 sy I played in a tournament at 16 and didn't finish last and I had a tournament trophy named for me and I say I am now writing' about hockey. Congratulations, Danny Holland.
