My biggest disappointment is that we didn't win the title the next two years. We were the best team in the state." Latin lost the final game the next two years, to Portsmouth, 63-62, and to Dayton Jefferson, 65-63.

Longtime press row observers still maintain that bad calls in the final moments cost Latin both championships. Gacey recalled that during the sectional playoffs in 1979, the school announced it would not reopen in the fall. "It was difficult for the players," he said. (The school reopened last fall as Notre Latin, in Chardon.) Strickland will always recall the camaraderie on the team and the feeling he got the first time he looked at the glass backboard at the championship round in "There were faces staring through the backboard," he said, referring to the crowd. "At Latin, all we saw was the wall.

That made a difference when you were shooting. Colin and I both threw up bricks in our first shots." Warren said he enjoyed many benefits from the championship, being invited to play in several allstar games. He attended a prestigious basketball camp in Pennsylvania, where he waited on tables along with such future National Basketball Association stars as Isiah Thomas and Jim Paxson. Warren's only regret is that the Latin team did not enroll en masse at CSU after its final season. BARTENDER, experienced preferred, buckeye rd.
